Mauritania has a long history that dates back to ancient times when the region was part of various African kingdoms and empires. The area has been influenced by cultural and trade exchanges with other peoples throughout the centuries.
In the Middle Ages, the Maury Kingdom, the Serengeti Kingdom, and the Mauritanian-Moorish Empire flourished. The region was also influenced by Islam and became one of the most important centers of Islamic preaching in North Africa.
France occupied Mauritania in the early 20th century and administered it as part of the French colonial empire in West Africa until it regained its independence on November 28, 1960.
